Portsea Hotel has great views of Port Phillip Bay and if you managed to get a table in the restaurant on a nice day you get to enjoy the sea breeze, a great view of the sea, the busy pier with people getting on the boats out towards the sea for diving, over some pub food and wine.
The property had been renovated recently and is styled in the classic navy interior style which matches the location so well. We visited on a weekend and there were already plenty of holiday makers and locals queuing up even before the restaurant opened at 11:30am.
We were in Portsea for the Australia Day weekend where we watched the fireworks exploding over the Sorrento foreshore. It was magical!
We ordered and paid at the counter, and the food gets delivered to our table. I ordered the fish and chips ($28). There were two pieces of battered rockling, chips, salad, pickled onions and tartare sauce. It was hot and crispy, complemented by a nicely seasoned salad.
In keeping with the seaside theme, we ordered a Frutti Di Mare pizza ($25) which had seasonal seafood which were mussels, prawns, calamari and scallops and cherry tomatoes. The tomato sauce was a little diluted and the seafood were of average quality but the cheese was delicious.
The food were probably a little overpriced but after all it is catering to the tourist and events market and there is probably also a premium for the views. We spent a little longer over lunch than usual but it was because the view of the sea was so mesmerising. I imagine it might have been different if it was raining and gloomy but would not be any less mesmerising.
For those who would like to enjoy the view but not spend too much, there is a reserve nearby where one could have a picnic lunch.
