Jo's Grill, Knoxfield

Why did the chicken cross the road? Answer below, scroll down down down...

Gosh, I like this restaurant! The food is crazily reasonably priced, it is tasty, and the owners are friendly. There are one or two dishes I keep ordering when I go here and they are:

Ayam Kresmes - Deep fried chicken with crumbs (they're sorta like tempura crumbs you get free in your udon), tempeh, salad, very delicious hot sambal and rice. It also comes with a small bowl of soup to whet your appetite. $13.50

Chicken Pack - This is only $9.50! I don't know where in this day and age of inflation that I can get a proper full sized, balanced meal for anything below $12. Seriously, this is such good value that I get a few to take away for later consumption. It comes with prawn crackers (yum!), grilled chicken with sauce of your choice (ranges from mild to spicy), pickled veges, rice and salad. One tip if you wish to takeaway - bring two of your own containers because the restaurant's take away box is made of styrofoam which cannot be recycled.

Spicy Green Chilli Chicken - this is one hot chicken! I am not kidding when I say get some milk to go with this dish because you're going to need it! The grilled chicken is covered with blended green chilli sauce, pips and all which gives it the highest capsaicin factor I've ever tasted. It is very addictive once you get used to it and through the tears running down your face and snot from your nose you'll nod your head and agree with me. It comes with tempeh, potato crisp and salad.

I've also tried their pork satay with rice ($17) - requires some waiting time to cook the satay properly. I prefer the chicken dishes because the pork was a little too tough for me; and oxtail soup with rice ($15) - it was delicious because tail meat is very flavourful but not enough meat for me. I think the chicken tastes best in this place. And that is why the chicken crossed the road to get away from me!

This restaurant is located at the front of an industrial complex. It also serves burgers, chips (the chips are diamond cut and well seasoned), ribs, wings but I suspect it is the Indonesian food fare that is the popular choice for the dinner crowd.

This would be the perfect place for families where the adults can enjoy spicier food and the kids can order their burgers and chips.

The Week Recapped

This week certainly has been eventful!

On Tuesday our new meal caterer delivered delicious home made food straight to the door. All we had to do was reheat the food, cook some rice to go with the dishes and wash up afterwards. We ordered Japanese tofu with pork mince, fried pork and salt and pepper chicken ribs. The pork and chicken although fried, did not taste oily. All three dishes tasted wholesome but tasty.

The next day I bit the bullet and finally went to the dentist to seek advice about a maligned wisdom tooth. What I didn't expect was to walk out of the surgery 45 minutes later with one tooth gone and a week's worth of steps to full recovery post wisdom tooth removal.

On Thursday more new varieties of meals were delivered but I was still on a soft food diet. I wasn't going to let it deter me so I cut everything into small pieces and just swallowed them whole. The Nestum chicken was really delicious but quite oily. The other dishes were fried fish with Thai chilli sauce and braised tofu.

We tried out a new cafe for lunch on Saturday. It was a location we have never really noticed before even though it was in our local area. The owner and his wife are such friendly and generous people that it was no wonder everyone who came into the cafe greeted them like long lost friends. We ordered a big breakfast and a chicken parma. The food was average but so generous. Who has ever seen a big breakfast that came with 3 eggs, 4 pieces of bread plus hash brown, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and 2 sausages all for $13.50?

We even had some leftovers for a picnic dinner in the park while enjoying open air opera in Canterbury Gardens. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed the show plus felt good supporting our musicians who have been sidelined for so long by the pandemic.

After an eventful week and a nearly healed jaw, I was finally able to catch up on house chores. My plan was to do some food preparation so that I have less to cook during the week. I made 5 dishes (my target was 6) that just needed to be reheated in some sauce. It was so tiring! For some R & R I got into Wordle, something I had become quite hooked on during the week.

Wordle is like Mastermind with words and it has been very enjoyable trying to guess the 5 letter word of the day in 6 tries or less. So, that has been my week. Night!
