Urgh Day

Ever gotten one of those days where everything just didn't seem to go right? What is it with those days where you wished you just hadn't gotten out of bed? I'd rather not delve on what happened today, but I sure was glad that when I got home dinner was cooked, the house warm, there were lots of hot water for a shower with great feisty classical music (one of my pet faves is to take a long hot shower listening to a vigorous piece of classical music playing at full volume in the bathroom) and then it was just time to catch a cooking show on telly. The day is looking up. Finally.

Huff Puff Goes the Pig

Gaz and I revisited the 1000 Steps yesterday. As part of our exercise regime (my fancy name to describe putting out the laundry, walking from the couch to the fridge etc), we aim to go to the 1000 Steps every Saturday. We visited the place about a month ago but haven't been able to go since then despite our best intentions. Other things just came up e.g. someone's party, other activities, sleep, you get the idea.

Anyway, Gaz was really struggling the last time we were there. This time, it was me who had to stop twice to catch my breath during the journey up. I even contemplated sitting on one of the benches in the middle of the hill indefinitely. Towards the end of the climb, the steps were the biggest and steepest. If my legs could scream, they would have lost their voice. Every leg muscle was aching and I was silently vowing not to come back! I was pretty sure it was the lard I'd consumed yesterday that weighed me down.

It occurred to me that my life at the moment is much like climbing the hill. With the state of the economy, things at work just became a whole lot uncertain. It's an uphill battle all the time. I don't know how much further I have to climb, when will things be better? Sometimes I just want stagnate, sit down in the middle of the climb and stay there, or give up. But I can't. Some parts of the climb is so much more difficult than the ones I've done. I know eventually I will reach the top, just like I did yesterday and then going down the hill will be much less painful. It was a breezy experience compared to the 1/2 hour climb before. Just like life will be. I'm glad that Gaz was there, and is here in my life. It makes the journey less scary.

Down Memory Lane

I've been down with a cold for this whole week. I spent the whole day today at home on the couch knitting, sleeping, watching telly or surfing the net. I could lead my whole life from this couch... Guests to my house need not worry about the cleanliness of this piece of furniture... I made sure to cover it with a blanket before I laid on it :)

While surfing the net, after reading the news and my daily doses of blogs, I decided to type my old school's name - Convent Klang into Google and see what the results yielded. The results showed me.... blogs written by enthusiastic teenagers attending my alma mater which sent me back down memory lane because I can remember being an energetic, go getter before I was burderned with reality - now I just spend my time at home knitting like a grandma! Google also spat out random results such as:

1) My ex-school's choir making it first in the district choir competition in 2007; and 2nd in state levels: Yeay!! I felt quite proud of their achievement, because I was also a choir member while at school. The details were sketchy, but I remembered during my year we got to the state level competitions but unfortunately did not win a place. There was a youtube clip of their performance singing Josh Groban's 'Raise Me Up'. It was good! I'm so glad that the choir society's going strong, and according to a pupil's blog, there is now over 100 members! Their costumes were as usual, not chic but much much better than the terrible outfits we had to wear!!

2) The primary school wing were closed for some time due to repairs to the whole building, which were paid for by Sunway Group's CEO Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah (no connection here, but I'm sure glad his kindness kept a piece of important history going). The building was erected in 1928, and if it was in Melbourne, would surely have been listed as a heritage building. I remember the cement floors, which were polished smooth with the scores of feet that have walked its floors since 80 years ago. I remember the long hall ways punctuated with sunshine which shone through from openings supported by graceful arches. Our classrooms had four wooden double doors, and during the day time each door was opened wide so that the air could flow, and also so that we could sweat it out. It was incredibly hot after lunchtime and not even the two furiously oscillating fans above our heads could help cool down the 30 odd students in each class. I don't want to remember the large toilet block... they were incredibly smelly with no proper ventilation and dark. There were no pictures of the school after the renovations, but I hope that the heritage touches of the building are preserved.

3) The Red House has won again in the annual school sports. Yeah... so what's new?? During my whole time at school, the victors were always Red and the losers were always Yellow House. I was in the Yellow House :( I secretly believe that when it came time to pick students, teachers always picked the athletic looking ones to the Red House!

I have fond memories of my school. I spent about 11 years of my life eating, breathing, laughing, studying, playing in that place. While I have not been in the place for more than 10 years now, I feel connected to the place... because some things just don't change..
