Opera for the People

Opera for the People was held in Sidney Myer Music Bowl on the 1st Feb 2020. Opera Australia and the Orchestra Victoria performed some classic favourites such as Nessun Dorma, the Flower Duet and Carmen.

Even though it was pouring and windy that night and news of coronavirus were concerning, many people still attended the event which was hosted by Dame Edna. It has been a while since the legendary icon performed so it was an honour to be in the audience. The whole event was presented by Anthony Pratt and Opera Australia so I think the Pratt's influence probably had some sway in persuading Dame Edna to step back into the limelight to host the show.

His jokes were very funny and it was mind boggling to think he is still walking around in heels at that age.

As described by Dame Edna, the night was a birthday gift from Pratt to his mother, Jeanne Pratt. Both of them were in the audience that night with their friends, sitting in the same chairs as the others. Although I knew little of the Pratts, I like their down to earth nature and generosity. After a little more reading, I admire how from a humble background, their hard work and business acumen has made Visy a well known brand.

The gates to the bowl opened at 4pm and the performances started at 8pm. It was a long wait to secure seats undercover but there were other entertainment in the interim such as a magician, mimes and a competition where everyone got a double pass by Opera Australia. We also had lovely neighbours and we happily chatted with them to while away time.

The show itself did not disappoint and it was awesome that there were surtitles displayed on an electronic board above the stage. There were also can can dancers and an encore performance.

I'm glad that we decided to go even though it was raining because otherwise I would missed a great performance and the really funny jokes by Dame Edna.
