I received a notice last year informing that quarterly tax notices will be sent soon, so wait for it because it'll tell how much and when it was payable. I waited for a notice that never came and the next thing I know, the early debt recovery people called. What a rude surprise!
I was infomed that they have even sent out a garnishee order, which is when the tax payer's bank is obligated to pay the amount without consultation with the account holder. Is this really warranted considering I have never been a day late with payments??
If they had sent out proper notices like they said they would instead of expecting people to check their MyGov account via a link that no one ever thought to click on, then they might have actually got their money on time. Then they don't have to spend time and resources on scaring people over a couple of bucks.
The consultants over the helpline were no help, unable to reprint or resend assessment notices and expected me to pay an amount that, for all I know had been plucked from the air, expecting me to check with the ATO when the said notice did not arrive on time (hello??!! Are you serious??? Maybe if you were giving out money, it would be different. Don't expect the public to do your job for you!)
After all the uproar last year about ATO sending incorrect notices and calling the debt collectors to scare poor people over these incorrect debt amounts, they still have not changed anything. Oh wait, they have. These days they do not send any notices at all, incorrect notices or not.
