Down Memory Lane

I've been down with a cold for this whole week. I spent the whole day today at home on the couch knitting, sleeping, watching telly or surfing the net. I could lead my whole life from this couch... Guests to my house need not worry about the cleanliness of this piece of furniture... I made sure to cover it with a blanket before I laid on it :)

While surfing the net, after reading the news and my daily doses of blogs, I decided to type my old school's name - Convent Klang into Google and see what the results yielded. The results showed me.... blogs written by enthusiastic teenagers attending my alma mater which sent me back down memory lane because I can remember being an energetic, go getter before I was burderned with reality - now I just spend my time at home knitting like a grandma! Google also spat out random results such as:

1) My ex-school's choir making it first in the district choir competition in 2007; and 2nd in state levels: Yeay!! I felt quite proud of their achievement, because I was also a choir member while at school. The details were sketchy, but I remembered during my year we got to the state level competitions but unfortunately did not win a place. There was a youtube clip of their performance singing Josh Groban's 'Raise Me Up'. It was good! I'm so glad that the choir society's going strong, and according to a pupil's blog, there is now over 100 members! Their costumes were as usual, not chic but much much better than the terrible outfits we had to wear!!

2) The primary school wing were closed for some time due to repairs to the whole building, which were paid for by Sunway Group's CEO Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah (no connection here, but I'm sure glad his kindness kept a piece of important history going). The building was erected in 1928, and if it was in Melbourne, would surely have been listed as a heritage building. I remember the cement floors, which were polished smooth with the scores of feet that have walked its floors since 80 years ago. I remember the long hall ways punctuated with sunshine which shone through from openings supported by graceful arches. Our classrooms had four wooden double doors, and during the day time each door was opened wide so that the air could flow, and also so that we could sweat it out. It was incredibly hot after lunchtime and not even the two furiously oscillating fans above our heads could help cool down the 30 odd students in each class. I don't want to remember the large toilet block... they were incredibly smelly with no proper ventilation and dark. There were no pictures of the school after the renovations, but I hope that the heritage touches of the building are preserved.

3) The Red House has won again in the annual school sports. Yeah... so what's new?? During my whole time at school, the victors were always Red and the losers were always Yellow House. I was in the Yellow House :( I secretly believe that when it came time to pick students, teachers always picked the athletic looking ones to the Red House!

I have fond memories of my school. I spent about 11 years of my life eating, breathing, laughing, studying, playing in that place. While I have not been in the place for more than 10 years now, I feel connected to the place... because some things just don't change..

Hope you are better in health, dear... Yupp, Convent Klang certainly brings good memories, one of them being our friendship!
